Arguing with my dentist about Lumineers?

June 27, 2014

I want to get porcelain veneers, but my dentist said because I grind my teeth I should get Lumineers. He said they’re stronger than other veneers and would be safer with the grinding. I’ve heard bad things about Lumineers and I would rather not use that brand. Is he right?

Denise- Florida

Denise,

I hope you won’t think me impolite, but I am going to have to say your dentist is an idiot.  While Lumineers are very strong, which is why they are a little thinner than some brands of porcelain veneers. However, Lumineers are equally susceptible to your teeth grinding as any other brand. Lumineers are marketed to dentists as easy to place, which I suspect is why your dentist was pushing those. I’m guessing he’s been taking their course.

Don’t despair about getting your smile makeover though. If you just got a mouth guard, it would protect whatever brand of porcelain veneers your chose from your teeth grinding.

I strongly suggest you get another dentist to do your veneers.

Can I go to the ER for a dental problem?

June 14, 2014

I’m in tons of pain. I don’t have a regular dentist, but there is something wrong with my tooth. I can’t bite down. Even breathing hurts. Will an ER see me for a dental emergency?

Sammie M. – New Jersey

Sammie,

I’m sorry for the pain you’re in. There are few things as painful as dental pain. I’m not sure going to the ER will be as useful as you think. Most of them will not treat detnal problems. They might give you some ibuprofen (and then charge you $400 for it.)

My suggestion would be that you see an emergency dentist. Many family dentists will treat dental emergencies for people who aren’t their patients. Most will even see you the same day, if not right away.  They’ll be able to get you out of pain right away. It’s possible they’ll have to schedule a second appointment to repair the root problem, but that will mostly depend on how busy their schedule is when you call.

Lumineers to straighten teeth?

May 30, 2014

I went to my dentist about straightening my teeth. He said because of their shape (meaning their appearance), I should get Lumineers to straighten them. I checked it out and they’re pretty expensive. Couldn’t I just use Invisalign or something? I’m happy with the shape of my teeth, or at least I was until he told me they weren’t attractive.

Denise R. – Cape Town

Denise,

I’m frustrated your dentist said anything to you that could make you uncomfortable with the appearance of your teeth. Everyone has a different perception of what is attractive, so if you’re satisfied with the appearance of your teeth than forget what he says.

If you’re a candidate for Invisalign, then that would be a much more affordable option for you.  You need to be aware that while Lumineers can change the shape and color of your teeth, it doesn’t actually straighten them. It just gives them the appearance of being straight.

Do I have to bring my child to a pediatric dentist?

May 14, 2014

We live in a small city/town. There is only one pediatric dentist. I really don’t want to see him because we used to have a relationship.  Is it OK to take a child to a general dentist? If not, I will suck it up and go see the lech.

Name Withheld

I know you want the best for your child. I can tell because you’re willing to sacrifice your comfort for the interest of your child. Let me put your mind at ease.  There are plenty of great general dentists who love to treat children and are highly qualified to as well.

One way to know if they enjoy treating children is the age at which they are comfortable having them in for their first appointment. If they say two or three years old, they’ll be good with children. If they say closer to seven or eight, then they’re not as comfortable with children as you’d like them to be.

Lumineers or porcelain veneers

April 30, 2014

I’m getting a smile makeover and wondered if I should get Lumineers and porcelain veneers?

Danielle B. – Hattiesburg, MS

Danielle,

I hope you won’t mind me saying you’re going about this the wrong way. You’re trying to do the job of the dentist. One thing you may not be aware of is that Lumineers ARE porcelain veneers. They’re just a specific brand of porcelain veneers.

Each brand has different strengths and weaknesses. Dentists know these nuances. My best advice is for you to find a really good cosmetic dentist, tell him what kind of smile you’re wanting, and let him decide which brand of porcelain veneers to get.

Worried our pediatric dentist is a pedophile

April 18, 2014

We’ve been going to a pediatric dentist for a little over a year. He never let the parents come back to the operatory, which always made me a little nervous.  Tonight I saw on the news that he was arrested on charges of child pornography.  I almost threw up.  Now I’m wondering if my child could be on some of that pornography.  My son is already asleep, so I haven’t spoken with him. Should I go to the police? How do I ever trust another dentist with my child?

Emily S. – Arkansas

Emily,

There is nothing worse than a breach of trust from people who work with our children. That is the vilest of crimes. I have a couple of suggestions for your. First, you can bring a photo of your child by the police station. Explain to them your concerns and leave the picture with them. They can compare it with the images they confiscated. That would be one way to find out without having to speak with your child about it.  Though, I’m feeling like you are worried about more than images. In that case, you could ask your child if their dentist ever made them feel unomfortable. Don’t press it.

When it comes to finding a new pediatric dentist, that is something easier to deal with. First, remember, most pediatric dentists get into this field because they care about children and have pure motives.  I know it can be frightening, especially after your experience today, but there are great people in this world.

It sounds like you had a gut feeling about this dentist. Your intuition is a good defense.  If you’re uncomfortable with anything, don’t go to that dentist. I think you would also feel better if you could be in the operatory with your child.  As long as your child responds well to that, your new dentist shouldn’t have any objections.  If he or she does, than find a different pediatric dentist.

I hope everything is OK with your son and you find the best pediatric dentist available in your state.

Pediatric Dentist or Family Dentist

March 29, 2014

I’m about to have my first baby. I’m wanted to know is it better to go to a family dentist or a pediatric dentist?

Holly H. – Oklahoma

Holly,

You can go to either one. A pediatric dentist has done some extra training regarding the dental care of children, but many people prefer a family dentist where everyone can be seen by the same dentist. It’s really a matter of preference.

You’ll want to make sure that the dentist you pick enjoys treating children. If they like to see them around three years old, you can be sure they are comfortable around children. If they want to wait until your child is around 8 or 10, you can be sure they are not the dentist for your child.

One option is to see a family dentist and he can refer you to a true pediatric dentist if there are any complicating issues.

How do I avoid horse teeth?

March 8, 2014

I have several friends who have had work done on their teeth. Some of them look gorgeous and natural, while others look a little like they have horse teeth or just obviously fake. How can I avoid the latter?

Sylvia S. – Florida

Sylvia,

There is nothing worse than spending a fortune on cosmetic dentistry and then being horrified by the results.  I have seen the horse teeth you are talking about. Many of them are from cases using Lumineers. Dentists without a lot of experience just jump on the no-prep background withoug realizing that it only works well for some cases.

The best thing you can do when looking to have a smile makeover is to pick the right dentist. Someone with real expertise in cosmetic dentistry can give you a gorgeous smile. The trick is picking someone with both technical skill as well as artistry.

Lumineers pop off

February 15, 2014

My sister got Lumineers. Her smile looks nicer. The teeth seem a little bulky to me, but that may be because I am not used to seeing her like that.  I was thinking of getting them myself, but hers have popped off twice. Is that normal? I think it would be embarassing if it happened in public. Her dentist always glues it back on for nothing.

Nancy G. – New Mexico

Nancy,

I think your sister has several problems. Both are caused by dentist who doesn’t know what he is doing. If her teeth look bulky, they probably are.  Lumineers are advertised as a no-prep. However, depending on someone’s smile, their teeth might need some minor preparation. If they don’t get that, they end up looking a little bulky and sometimes too long.

The next problem is the popping off. That tells me that her dentist doesn’t understand the bonding process. When done right, this process is permanent.

It’s fine if you want to get Lumineers, I just wouldn’t use the same dentist.

Bad advice for dental fear

January 30, 2014

I recently read an article that promised to help people get over dental fear in just a few easy steps.  Then it proceded to give such banal advice that I was frustrated with it and I don’t even suffer from dental fear.

Some examples were to bring a magazine or plan something fun for after  your appointment. Then, it had the gall to mention that if your fear persisted, maybe you should see a phychiatrist.

When a patient is a afraid of the dentist, it is usually one of two reasons: either they are afraid of needles or they’ve had a painful previous experience at the hands of a dentist. In either case, the advice in the article I read would be useless.

So what do you do if you’re afraid of the dentist? Well, if it is the needle that makes you go weak in the knees, I would suggest you go to a dentist who uses “the wand”. You can learn more about that on our Cater to Cowards page on our website.

If you’ve had a horrible experience at the dentist than you have to find ways to build positive experiences.  One of the easiest ways to do that is to use a dentist who performs sedation dentistry.  That would allow you to get the necessary dental care without fear of pain.
